Knox, Ronald Arbuthnot

Knox, Ronald Arbuthnot
(1888–1957)
   Devotional Writer.
Knox was the son of the Anglican Bishop of Manchester. He was educated at the University of Oxford and was initially a dedicated Anglo- Catholic. His satire on the modernist position Absolute and Abitofhell brought him immediate acclaim, but in 1917 he was received as a Roman Catholic and subsequently he was ordained. Between 1926 and 1939, he held the position of Roman Catholic chaplain to the undergraduates of Oxford. Subsquently he concentrated on translating the Vulgate into modern English. This version proved extremely popular. Among his other works were an early autobiography, Some Loose Stones, Enthusiasm and several detective stories. He was a highly influential figure in England in the middle years of the twentieth century and was the subject of numerous reminiscences.
